You can get a simple assessment of your home energy consumption by using ENERGY STAR’s Home Energy Yardstick. Just go to the Yardstick web site and enter your zip code, number of occupants, house size, fuel types, and information from a year’s worth of utility bills.

You’ll receive a score that

  • tells you how your home’s energy use compares to that of similar homes in your climate region; and
  • establishes a baseline against which you can monitor your progress as you make home energy improvements.

Once you have your score, you can look to ENERGY STAR’s Home Energy Advisor for recommendations about how to improve your home’s energy efficiency. These online tools are not as detailed or customized as an on-site home energy assessment, but they provide useful information—and they’re free.
