Studies have found that a new, energy-efficient dishwasher saves significant amounts of both water and energy compared to hand dishwashing. So if your dishwasher is more than seven to ten years old, you’ll probably want to consider buying a new one. Not only can a new dishwasher save water and energy, but some of them are exceptionally quiet. Dishwasher performance does vary, however, so do your homework.
At the kitchen sink, a low-flow faucet—or one that lets you easily vary the flow rate—can reduce your water consumption without sacrificing function. Also consider installing a foot pedal to activate the faucet; this reduces water waste that occurs when you turn the water on and off.
